PEARLS

TYPE

The four main types of pearls are akoya, freshwater, south sea, and Tahitian. Akoya pearls were the first pearls to be cultured. Next, we have freshwater pearls, which posses less luster than the other stones. South sea pearls are usually larger than akoya pearls but are much more sensitive. The Tahitian pearl is also very sensitive during the cultivation process and comes in black, grey, or silver.

COLOR

Pearls are presented in a variety of designs and colors that include pink, silver, black, and yellow. Color variations do not increase or decrease the value. It is important that the color of these pearls are matched within a piece of jewelry.

LUSTER

A pearl's luster is the result of multiple layers of nacre the oyster or mollusk secreted to make the pearl. More luster is based on the amount of nacre there is. You will notice the luster as the deep sheen that reflects light on the surface of the pearl.

SHAPE

The most common shape amongst pearls is the traditional round, but sometimes other shapes can create beautiful, elegant, and eccentric jewelry.

SURFACE

Pearls rely on the environment to be shaped and produced, so very rarely will there ever be a perfect pearl. Pearls may not always turn out smooth and will often have bumps and spots. Sometimes these blemishes can be hidden when jewelry is being made with the stringing process and setting.

SIZE

The size of a pearl by itself does not raise the value of a pearl. However, if combined with a round shape and beautiful luster the price can increase dramatically.
